Ballet Silvius Leopold Weiss (1687-1750) By Estelle Bertrand This piece follows the Overture that we proposed in the previous issue of Guitare classique. Historically attributed to Silvius Leopold Weiss, it is in reality a piece by Manuel Maria Ponce in the baroque style that was played in concert by a major "accomplice", a certain Andrés Segovia. Since Weiss's work was little known at the time, no one realized the deception. Overture and Ballet was published in 1982 by Éditions Transatlantiques and fingered by Rafael Andia. This ballet in C sharp minor follows a tripartite form of the ABA type, with A being exposed in measures 1 to 18 and B (in A major) in measures 19 to 26. Borrowings from neighboring keys are frequent, as evidenced by the numerous alterations. Part B is built on an A pedal and contrasts with the rest by its popular, subtly spirited character.
